HAPPIEST COUPLES SLEEP CLOSE TOGETHER

Image
It may be better for your health to sleep in a separate bed than your partner—but a new study finds that the happiest couples are those who sleep close together. Very close together, as in less than an inch apart. A survey of 1,000 people found that those who kept such close parameters had an 86% chance of reporting they were satisfied in their relationship, compared to 66% for those who slept 30 inches apart or more, the Telegraph reports. Another predictor of relationship happiness: touch. While 94% of couples who made physical contact throughout the night reported a happy relationship, just 68% of couples who kept their distance did the same. The survey also looked into how, exactly, the couples slept together: 42% back-to-back, 31% facing the same direction, and 4% face-to-face. The happiest positions? Well, according to the Independent , 91% of people who reported sleeping with their backs touching also reported a happy relationship, as did 91% of people who rep...

When we think about health, wellness, nutrition and beauty, most of us want to feel healthier, look younger and live longer. A NEW DRUG FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES

Image
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved GlaxoSmithKline Plc's Tanzeum injection for treating adults with type 2 diabetes, in combination with diet and exercise. Tanzeum will carry a warning on its label that tumors of the thyroid gland were observed in rodent studies with some drugs belonging to the same class. However, it is unknown whether Tanzeum causes thyroid C-cell tumors, the FDA said on its website. (link.reuters.com/jyp58v) The regulator also asked for post-marketing studies to test the drug's dosing, efficacy and safety in children, and to check for heart-related risks. It also asked the company to identify any increase in medullary thyroid cancer cases related to Tanzeum. The once-weekly drug, generically known as albiglutide, was approved last month in Europe, where it will be marketed as Eperzan. Analysts expect the drug to hit $430 million in sales by 2018, according to Thomson Reuters data. Tanzeum belongs to the same class of inj...

DRINKS THAT SHRINK YOUR BELLY

Image
That ice-cold lemonade may hit the spot on a 90-degree day, but it’s not doing your waistline any favors. A 20-ounce Minute Maid Lemonade contains 250 calories and 68 g of sugar. Fortunately, there are plenty of refreshing summer sips that you can drink without guilt—and they may actually help you lose weight . Flat Belly Drink: Flavored Water Staying hydrated is important when you’re trying to trim down. Drinking plenty of water helps your body maintain proper fluid balance, stops water retention (a big cause of bloated bellies), and even increases the feeling of fullness so you eat less overall. Flat Belly Drink: Watermelon Smoothie As long as they’re made without sugary mixers like sherbet, smoothies are a guilt-free way to hydrate—and watermelon is a terrific, low-cal smoothie base. Not only is it a natural hydrator because of its water content, watermelon is also loaded with nutrients, including cancer-fighting lycopene, as well as an amino acid known ...

LOW BLOOD SUGAR MAY CAUSE COUPLES TO FIGHT MORE.

Image
A quick candy bar may stave off more than hunger. It could prevent major fights between husbands and wives, at least if a new study that used voodoo dolls is right. That's because low blood sugar can make spouses touchy, researchers propose. In fact, it can make them “hangry,” a combination of hungry and angry, said Ohio State University psychology researcher Brad Bushman. “We need glucose for self-control,” said Bushman, lead author of the report, which was released Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Anger is the emotion that most people have difficulty controlling.” The researchers studied 107 married couples for three weeks. Each night, they measured their levels of the blood sugar glucose and asked each participant to stick pins in a voodoo doll representing his or her spouse. That indicated levels of aggressive feelings. The researchers found that the lower the blood sugar levels, the more pins were pushed into the doll. ...

5 STEPS TO AVOID GETTING `HANGRY`

Image
Your energy is zapped, your stomach is rumbling, and your personality has transformed from level-headed and sweet to short-tempered and snippy. Your hunger has led to anger: You’re officially hangry. We’ve all been there, and it’s not pretty, but fortunately—for the sake of your relationships and social life—it can be avoided. Here are five rules for thwarting hunger-induced crankiness, and the binge that often follows. Eat more often Many of my clients tell me they get so caught up with work, family responsibilities, or errands that they lose track of time, wait way too long to eat, and wind up (regrettably) biting someone’s head off. When you’re distracted, you may lose touch with your body’s signals and tune out hunger…and end up going more than 4 to 5 hours without eating. Or, if you eat at erratic times your hunger signals may get thrown off kilter. In either case, your body still needs a steady supply of fuel to perform both mentally and physically: When your blo...
