CATARACT: SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

What Causes Cataracts? A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, most elderly either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other. What is the lens? The lens is a clear part of the eye that helps to focus light, or an image, on the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina. Once it reaches the retina, light is changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image you see will be blurred. The eye functions much like a camera. Light rays enter the eye, passing through the cornea, the aqueous humor -- transparent fluid in the front of the eye -- and th

CHEAT ON YOUR DIET

“During the holidays, we tend to eat more and exercise less. We also tend to eat the wrong types of foods, and before we know it, we are gaining a lot of weight.” - Dr. Michael Aziz, author 'The Perfect 10 Diet'  THIS IS HOW YOU CAN CHEAT ON YOUR DIET 1. Snack on vegetables “Vegetables have a lot of fiber – they have nutrients and vitamins,” Aziz said. “They fill you up nicely.” Taking a bite from the holiday gift basket instead of the chocolate box is a good idea. 2. Limit which fruits you eat “Fruits contain a sugar called fructose, and the upper limit that the body can handle in one single day is about 15 grams,” Aziz said.  “And many fruits have more than 15 grams - bananas in general, apples, pears.  Stick with fruits that have a lower sugar content, such as strawberries, blueberries.” 3. Think outside the box when it comes to dessert “Chocolate has a lot of sugar, and it’s going to add a lot of calories,” Aziz said. “It's going to mess

GLAUCOMA: SILENT SIGHT ROBBER

WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Glaucoma is high pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure)  resulting in optic nerve damage, which may cause loss of vision, usually but not always cause this damage. Glaucoma is a degenerative disease that if left untreated can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve resulting in gradual vision loss and eventual blindness. Damage to the optic nerve is usually caused by an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Over time, as the optic nerve fibers are destroyed, peripheral (side) vision is lost. Glaucoma is a condition in which the normal fluid pressure inside the eyes (intraocular pressure, or IOP) slowly rises as a result of the fluid aqueous humor – which normally flows in and out of the eye – not being able to drain properly. Instead, the fluid collects and causes pressure damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma can damage your vision so gradually you may not notic

EYE : COMMON PROBLEMS

As I am aging, the challenge of good vision is setting in. This challenge mounts as I don't think much of it though retaining good vision is important to me, so most of my articles, I mean the next three to five will be about how to maintain and retain good vision. What are the common problem? Age related eye problems are common, some of these problems can affect anyone at any age. They include: Presbyopia. This is the loss of the ability to clearly see close objects or small print. It is a normal process that happens slowly over a lifetime, but you may not notice any change until after age 40. Presbyopia is often corrected with reading glasses. Floaters . These are tiny spots or specks that float across the field of vision . Most people notice them in well-lit rooms or outdoors on a bright day. Floaters often are normal, but can sometimes indicate a more serious eye problem, such as retinal detachment , e
